This is the syllabus we teach at both our Surulere and Ijebu Ode offices. It starts under the bonnet and ends with you driving confidently on your own. Here is the class by class breakdown.
First class: know your car
Your first class has three parts:
- The difference between manual and automatic transmission
- What to know in the bonnet as a car user: oil, coolant, battery, brake fluid, and the checks you should do regularly
- Things inside the car: the dashboard, the controls, how to set your mirrors and your seat
Second class: road rules and safety
- We go through your first assignment together
- Road signs, and what each one is telling you
- Road markings and what each line means
- Tools in the boot, and the emergency tools inside the car, like the headrest and a razor blade or scissors
- Traffic control: traffic lights, traffic wardens and hand signals
- What to do when another driver is overtaking you
- Right of way at junctions and roundabouts
Third, fourth and fifth classes: on the road
Three full practical sessions on real roads, with your instructor beside you the whole time. This is where clutch control, gear changes, steering and road sense start to become second nature.
Sixth and seventh classes: reversing
Two classes devoted to reversing. Straight line reverse, reversing around corners, and parking, repeated until you stop thinking about it and just do it.
Eighth class: revision and test
We revise everything, then you take an internal test so we both know you are ready.
Ninth class: exam and perfect reverse
Your exam, plus perfecting your reverse alongside more driving on the road.
The remaining classes: driving, driving, driving
Everything after that is road time. The more you drive, the more natural it feels, and by the end you will be driving with real confidence.
